Ingredients:
- 2 cups of sugar
- 1 tablespoon of Cocoa
- 1 stick of butter
- 2 tablespoons of White Karo Syrup
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla flavoring
- 1 can of cream (12 oz.)
Preparation:
First, pour two cups of sugar into a pot then add a tablespoon of cocoa mix, the stir well.
While i was doing the beginning grandma would be starting on the rest. We would talk about things that are going on in our lives. We would play little games. Just anything to pass the time.
Cut up and add a stick of butter or margarine then add one 12 oz can of cream.
Take a few moments to let the butter start melting into the cream. When the butter is finished melting, add one teaspoon of vanilla flavoring.
You bring the mixture to a boil and let it cook for 15 minutes.
During the 15 minutes my grandma would always put on K love. It is a christian station. She loves to listen to music while cooking. We also used to sit at the table because it was usually almost noon and Grandpa would be coming home to eat lunch with us. She always waited on him to arrive.
"Hello Sarah Jane!" My grandfather shouted happily.
"Hello Sweetie." Grandma said to him.
Grandpa started calling me Sarah Jane a long time ago but he never actually told me why. He likes to play around and make silly jokes because he doesn't really care what other people think about him.
By this time the 15 minutes are up and grandma doesn't like to waste time.
"Sarah, Come finish the gravy if you are ready to eat!" Exclaimed grandmother from the living room sofa.
So I did as she told me and then we all gathered around the dining room told. It's a tradition.
My grandparents are very religious so we all pray before each meal at their house.
She brought the gravy to the table and we talked for about 2 hours then we all just decide to leave the table to go watch television.
This is one of my favorite family memories of my Grandma's Chocolate Gravy because my family was so happy being around each other and enjoying the familiar company of the people who surrounded us. Now it is harder for my grandma to cook or for anything to be the way it was because they are getting older and it is hard to get around. The memories, like this one, sure do mean a lot because soon all we will have is the memories.
